Scout Tobias 5k route

This is my common 5k route. If I just want a quick run, this route is my first option. It has a combination of level and uphill roads. The surroundings also alternates between establishments and residential houses. The houses are great because the people living in the area are on the richer side. There is a portion though along Mother Ignacia wherein there is a sudden change of environment from establishments to slums. Everytime I pass along this area some children run along while other kids initiate high fives. It never fails to make me smile when they do that.

One thing I don't like though is that there are areas where I need to cross a main road or intersection. Sometimes it forces me to stop, slow down or increase my pace to dodge away from cars. Anyway some drivers are ready to give way, which is good!

My verdict for this route is 6 out of 10.

Collinas Verdes Route

The Collinas Verdes is no doubt one of the best running routes I had been into. It is located north of the metro (see map below) around 20 minutes drive from SM Fairview. Quite far if your from Quezon City, but surely it offers a break from pollution and busyness of the city.

I ran in this route last September 21. 2011. I arrived around 5:30 AM and since it was my first time in this route it took me a while to recognize the place. But after I took the right turn to enter the subdivision, the rest was history, men! There were just two or three people at the time whom I saw jogging. Since the subdivision was still under construction, there were no houses yet, except for one or two unfinished houses. The main road was already in place and of course in its best condition. The place was elevated and I was seeing the trees around the subdivision in one side and on the other side the small houses and buildings from the nearby subdivisions.There were no cars to dodge from and the roads were left to me and for a few people. The scenery was also great! I thought it was a Tagaytay-look-alike route except for overview of Taal. After some time, the sun started out and runners begun to add up. Some people were just going for their morning exercise. Some people ran with their barkada and some people like me were enjoying a solitary run.

The main road of the subdivision is around 2.2 kilometers, mostly uphill, then another 2.2 kilometers back, downhill. I was going through the route for the first time and I thought this would be a perfect place to train for the Condura Marathon in February. Perfect also for my Speed training!

The only thing I could wish to add up in this awesome route would be stores or vendors that sell energy drinks. This way, I don’t have to bring a hydration belt with me (as if I have one! :D ). No doubt there would be vendors here in the future so for those who are looking for business opportunities, here’s one for you!

Overall, the route is great and awesome with the scenery. The uphill and downhill course is good for training. For me, its close to perfection so the verdict for this route is 8 out of 10. Check it out!

Tobias to UP route

This is my route from tobias to UP. I prefer to hit Maginhawa St. then C.P. Garcia from Kalayaan Avenue via Mahinhin and Magiting because the area has less traffic compared to the area around Philcoa.

This is my second time to hit this route. The first was more of a walkathon with my friend. :) But this time I was able to time myself well and have found some hydrating spots also.



For 5-10k route, the verdict is 6 out of 10.

New Running Shoes

At long last, I have found a pair of running shoes that fits me well and is suitable for my foot type, not to mention, a thing of beauty in my eyes. :)

The long weekend sale last August 27-31, plus my strong desire to get back into running triggered (probably) the most exciting acquisition of a running gear for me. My first stop that day was at Toby's sports store, it was where the Adidas' Adizero Mana 5 caught my eye. It was especially made for flat and mild flat footed people, just exactly what I was looking for. Being one of the items under the 20% off sale, my desire to buy it really soared to the highest level. But of course, as experience thought me, I did not buy it right away. I went first to other sports store for they might offer lower price for better running shoes. Well, after probably three hours of walking, looking and fitting, I found nothing to match the Adizero Mana. There was already a pinch in my heart (“kurot sa puso” :D ) to buy it. And so the inevitable happened. I bought the shoes, with a smile on my face (a good sign :) ).

So far, it has been good to me. No blisters after 5k and 6k runs. I can also feel the lightness of the shoes. I have yet to plan my next long run with it, but be assured that I will share my experience to everyone after that happens. By then I would be in a better position to write a review for my Adidas Adizero Mana. First time!

I am now more excited to push through with my speed training which is a part of my preparation for the Condura Skyway Marathon 2012. All right! :)

The Wet Test and the Search for the Next Running Shoes!

A day after my 15.4k run, I felt a pain in the outer right side of my right foot. Still tolerable but annoying since the pain is triggered everytime I'm using my right foot. My conclusion was that my running shoes are giving up on me. The rubber beneath the shoes were starting to come off and I felt that the soles are not flat anymore, maybe because I used it also for basketball (yea good job!). And as if I needed a second opinion, I used it again last August 21. Confirmed. After 4.2k of running, I just had to stop because of the pain. I started walking with a little bit of limping. It was a good thing I was with Ernest who is not really a runner. We walked most of the remaining kilometers of the 11k workout. My conviction to buy a new pair of running shoes became stronger.

I was searching in the internet different some different designs of shoes when a friend asked me if I knew what foot type do I have. I knew that there are running stores that have machines and technologies to know your foot type. But because I was too lazy to go there(heheh), I tested it myself using the WET test(click here for more details). The wet test is a simple way of knowing your foot type by just using water and paper. Just soak the sole of your foot and step on a paper. I used a newspaper.
Lo and behold, the wet test told me that I have a flat left foot and a neutral right foot. I never thought this was possible and I became conscious on how I walk and run. I was convinced that they are not the same because I started to feel and observe the slight difference in the way I step each foot! A little disturbing but fun to know more about your body.. Oh well google! I guess I just have to buy a pair of stability running shoes to compensate for the left flat foot since neutral type mostly can wear just about any kind of shoe. Right now I'm still on the look for my new pair of running shoes. I can't wait to get back to running again!

View Running Workout

Endomondo Running Workout: 15k, rain or shine. Its been a while since I had a long run. This is the first run I used Endomondo app in my smartphone. Looks good! :)

How did I got into running?

This is my first post to this blog. I had a little bit of thinking a while ago why did I put up this blog. I thought this would be a good venue for me to keep track of my running experience and to share to others as well. To inspire maybe or just to let others know of the fun and excitement I feel and they would feel when they got into the sport (or hobby, or whatever people want to call it).

"How did I got into running?" sounds like a fitting  topic to start up this blog. Well, the first time I ran was summer of 2009, I was with the brothers of the Servants of the Word, a missionary brotherhood, having a retreat in Tagaytay. One night, some brothers just decided to have a run the following morning. During the time, I don't know what is the distance of the route that we were talking about and certainly I don't know anything about my limitation.  We ended up running around 9 kilometers. Yes, good job for a first time run. Well I walked a great part of it. But still hitting the road for around 1.5 hours was no joke.  Part of what kept me going was the company. And of course not wanting to be left in some area I was not familiar with. I was with brother Marlon who was in the lead and Arick, a fellow newbie. This first run taught me that I can actually run long distances. I actually enjoyed the muscle pain that came with the fulfillment of finishing that run with my friends.

I started running more regularly around June or July of last year (2010). My usual run is around 5k in Scout Area, Quezon City. By this time, I already have a desire to run a marathon. A lot of it came from my friends who just recently went for a marathon and enjoyed it. My friend Vincent went for the Milo marathon and came out of it alive. But then he was training for it all that summer and being faithful to it. He shared that he was waking up early in the morning to run four times a week with varying distance, gaining more mileage per week. Now why would people spend so much time training for a marathon? Isn't it hard? Even painful?  Whenever I thought about it at the time, the more I ask myself "Can I do it? 42k?". I knew it would be hard and close to impossible, but it just made me more excited to conquer it(bring it on!). I just have to try and see for myself. And so my training begun. I had my own training plan thanks for brother Jops(coach).

And that's it! I became more enthusiastic to run just after writing this. :)
